The Hunter Region’s most vocal bush orator, award-winning folklorist and author Bob Skelton AKA “The Minmi Magster” has captured in his unique style the characters and happenings of this great land he so dearly loves.
He was born in Waratah, Newcastle, in 1939 and his formative years were spent with his twin brother Dave in their father’s blacksmith and engineering shop. It was there he was introduced to bush poetry by the old chaps who came from the country looking for work, and he listened to their yarns as they passed the time in the workshop.
Bob was soon entertaining customers with poems of his own and his father would introduce him saying, “Dave is the better twin on the tools but Bob is the better magger.” Hence “The Minmi Magster“.
In 1969 Bob purchased the old Minmi School property with his wife Kay and took up a 150 acre grazing lease which he maintains to this day with the help of his son Rob.
After winning the Mallee Root bush poetry competition in 1994 and being featured on national television he has been in constant demand ever since. He is a foundation member of the Hunter Bush Poets and was their inaugural president.
He has a regular Friday morning spot on radio station 2HD with Richard King and is a popular favourite at Tocal events and Farmers Markets, earning his title as the “Hunter Valley’s Most Vocal Bush Orator“.
